499 years ago, God used a very flawed, self-condemning Catholic monk named Martin Luther to end the hegemony of the Catholic church and to bring about salvation by faith alone, in the Word of God alone, by Christ alone, for the glory of God alone. Were it not for this ground-shifting, radical intervention in human history, there would be no Christian (non-Catholic) churches today. John Calvin took what Luther started and carried on to its proper, logical, conclusion.
Next year marks the 500th anniversary of that life-changing event, and I am going to ensure that the Congregational church parish that I am pastoring will celebrate the occasion. If you want to know why this is so important, here is an excellent blog by John Piper.
