Pharaoh again tests God’s patient love, provoking Him to enact more plagues against Egypt. This time the destruction hits the economic power of Egypt by the livestock being sickened, along with hail destroying crops, and the boils afflicting the bodies of people. Pharaoh cries out, admits he’s a sinner, and gives false lip service to how he will ‘set free’ God’s people (v. 27) – but he’s lying again.
But pharaoh is hardening his heart against God, and that really is the choice we all have as people – to harden our hearts against God OR to listen to Him and soften our hearts and follow He who redeems sinners. That is true for non-believer and believer alike. How do we overcome a hard heart? In Exodus 9:16b, God directly tells pharaoh why He has been afflicting Egypt: “I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth“. THIS is the gospel message, and why every person has been put on earth. Are we going to listen and give God the glory in our lives? Here is my sermon on this from Exodus 9 (c.f. Revelation 8:10-13).
